Quicker Than A Rey Of Light

Chances are you've heard of Lana Del Rey by now. If you didn't catch her single "Video Games" via YouTube whirlwind, then you probably did see her on SNL last month, a performance which many have dubbed the worst in SNL history (although I feel like people have been too quick to forget when Ashlee Simpson graced their stage...). Love her or hate her, you can't deny that the girl's got that retro style that's so popular right now. And we couldn't help but notice the resemblance between this rising star and one of the original supermodels, Jean Shrimpton.

With her famous pout and big blue eyes, she's channeling the Vogue model. And now, in a somewhat controversial move on the publication's part, Miss Del Rey is March's cover girl for British Vogue.

While she is undoubtedly easy on the eyes (and the ears, for that matter), the backlash stems from her hyper-speed rise to fame. While Vogue tends to reserve their cover for more established talent, who knows? Maybe Lana will end up being a repeat cover girl, like her lookalike.

Take a peek behind-the-scenes of the shoot.

What do you think...does this star have staying power? Looks like Mulberry thinks so...check out their new "Del Rey" bag:

LISTEN: CHAIRLIFT

Check out this Brooklyn-based duo if you're into electronic pop. Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly of Chairlift mix soft, sweet vocals with an enticing array of different sounds to make for some catchy-but-unique songs. You may have heard their single "Bruises" a few years ago when Apple included the track in one of their famous iPod commercials. The two were also featured on tracks from some of our favorite artists, such as Washed Out and Holy Ghost!.

We love their latest disc, entitled Something, which is full of equally attractive tracks, such as "I Belong In Your Arms" and "Amanaemonesia."

It's A Dogs Life

Anyone that knows me also knows how important my dogs are to me.  Lately Man's Best Friend has been in the spotlight- This week's Time magazine puts our four legged companion smack-dab on the cover of their issue.

And while everyone is still discussing their favorite Superbowl commercial, to me, the clear front runners are the ones with the dogs in them.

And now, some pooches even have blogs:

Meet Fenway the dog.

Fenway is a Canine Companions for Independence puppy. He’s training to be a service dog to help a person with a disability. He’s living in Massachusetts with a volunteer puppy raiser. As the official service dog in training of the Boston Red Sox, he’ll be visiting his namesake Fenway Park over the next year and a half. Subscribing to his blog will not only allow you access to behind the scenes action at the ballpark as Fenway reports on it, but it is a great way to teach your kids about not only service dogs but the act of volunteering and all the good that comes from it.

Play ball.

Hollywood and Divine

Recently as a group, we've been staying after work to sharpen our skills on styles that we rarely get to use in the salon.  Most recently, the Finger Wave.

As if on cue, the cover of Vanity Fair is emblazoned with starlets sporting their own finger waves.

Originating in the 20's and 30's, finger waves remain something that all hairdressers know how to do.... The tricky part is doing them well.  So we practiced two ways of getting the look- Wet and dry.

Sophia was subjected to the curling iron set on dry hair:

We had fun practicing on Timmy (over and over) for the wet version:

We also had a little west coast/ east coast competition on who can do them better.  Obviously Sophia and I won- Californians aren't messing around when it comes to finger waves.  Clearly we wore Shannon out.

Kristen Dunst has got nothing on Timmy-  He rocked it!

The Gram-Slam

Sunday night Kevin and I settled in to watch the Grammys. Even thou I dont listen to nor recognize half of the acts nominated. But how could you not of turned in. I had to watch my girl Adele perform, and I had to pay tribute to Whitney. Many memories of my gay youth were set to her music.

And it seems many of stars were also honoring idols both past and present.

Alicia Keys and Katy Perry  were channeling Elvis with their pompadours. Sorry ladies theres only one king.

Rhianna while i dig the blonde over the candy apple red. I still need some time to digest it. But your body was smoking in that dres. Kudos to you, I predicited a nip slip and I lost that bet.

And Carrie, while you remain one of my favorite blondes those lashes were out of control. Straight up Ardel from a drag queens boudoir.

Adele, are words really necesary. That voice, the newly golden locks. You are truly a class-act pure glamour, Ann - Margaret doesn't hold a candle to you. But she does have a character (Ann Margrock) named after her on the flintstones.

Yes, the Grammys did not dissapoint. Nicki Minaj stills tries to be outspoken but is acually laughed at. Gaga walked out before the show was over after losing all to Adele (sore loser). And Fergie forgot when you wear a fishnet dress couture or not leave the spanks at home.

Jennifer Hudson did amazeballs paying tribute to Whitney, Get over it haters, the girl was paying respect and knocked it out of the park.

 Peace.
